27.12.21017 - Early rise. The alarm clock rang at 5.20 a.m. We had to catch the train to Sydney Airport at 6.27 a.m. Our flight to Darwin was to leave at 09.40.
We had a good nearly 4 hour flight to Darwin. We had been warned about the high temperatures in Darwin which we remembered from our last visit in 1992. On arrival we were greeted with approx. 26 degrees and a high humidity.
After collecting our hired car we drove into Darwin and found our very nice apartment with a swimming pool quite easily and made use of the pool!
27th December 2017
Early rise. The alarm went off at 5.20 a.m as we needed to get the plane from Sydney to Darwin. Flight left at 09.40 and we arrived in HOT Darwin 3 1/2 hours later.
Everything went according to plan, we collected our rental car and headed for our hotel in the city centre. Temperatures are around 36 degrees with high humidity.
We were pleased to arrive at our lovely large apartment in an hotel block with a large swimming pool which we immediately made use of. We enjoyed a quiet evening in our hotel.
We had been warned about the high temperatures in Darwin which we remembered from our last visit in 1992.
27.12.2017 AUFBRUCH NACH DARWIN
Der Wecker verrichtete seinen Dienst, kleines Frühstück, Koffer ins Auto.
Kerry brachte uns zum nahen Bahnhof, kurze Zeit später saßen wir in der S-Bahn um
zum Flughafen zu fahren. Alles klappte wieder wie am Schnürchen und pünktlich verließ das Flugzeug Sydney. Linda sitzt am Fenster und hat Spaß Australien von der Vogel -Perspektive aus zu fotografieren, wir sind bestimmt 90% der Flugzeit von 3.50 Stunden über unentwickeltes Outbackgebiet geflogen, nebenbei entwickelt sie noch Bilder für Ihre Website. Bei 33 Grad und entsprechend hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit nahmen wir den Mietwagen unter beschlag, suchten unser Hotel, fanden es , richteten uns ein und unternahmen noch einen kurzen Abstecher in die nahe City.

Darwin hat einen sehr kleinen Flughafen, die Stadt wirkt modern und vor allen Dingen sehr sauber. In der riesigen Region leben ca. 165.000 Tsd Einwohner. Ein Problem sahen wir immer wieder in den Städten sowie vor den Malls, es lagen oder saßen
Aboriginals herum die mit sich nichts an zu fangen wussten, allerdings haben sie niemanden belästigt oder gebettelt.

An early start heading to Litchfield National Park. We were told it would take us approx. 1 1/2 hours to drive there. It took us approx. 3 hours with not too many photo stops. If I deduct 30 minutes for photo stops it was still 2 1/2 hours monotonous driving. This part of Australia is extremely hot, green - tropical conditions. The heat is sometimes unbearable and although I like Darwin as such, it is not a place that I would like to live in. Today we had approx. 38 degrees or even hooter, high humidity, no refreshing breeze, just a hot sticky atmosphere.
Although we had taken 2 bottles of water with us it was not enough. You should have up to 3 liters of water per person with you when traveling in the outback. It was an interesting tour but I found myself getting quite irritated by the heat, high humidity and flies. I was always glad to get back into the car and the air conditioning. There is also the danger of snakes in tropical areas and I felt very much on my guard at all times although this was probably exaggerated on my part. Australia is a country that one should be aware of the fact once out of the town or city you must keep your eyes open.
A great thing about the National Parks here in Australia is that the entrance is free. We visited about 4 different waterfalls and water holes where locals and tourist were swimming. Although the water looked beautiful and clean some of the waterholes were so full that we did not feel like getting in, even in the heat. It is the Christmas holiday season so a lot of Australians are also out and about.
These water holes are safe at this time of the year but when the weather changes and it rains a lot they have to be closed because that is when the crocodiles come in.
It is MOST important here in Australia to only swim were the locals swim. If you are on a beach and no-one is in the water there is a reason. Perhaps an area endangered by sharks, crocodiles or poisonous jellyfish or just a strong under current which could drag you out to sea.
What really shocked me on the south coast, which which fell in love with, was the intensive UV rays. I had to double up or even treble my camera settings. On a sunny day in Europe where I would take a ISO setting of 200 with a 500th second and Aperture of 8, I needed 1600th of a second and an aperture of 14. This proves how intensive the rays are. Most dangerous on a long term basis without a grade 50 sun tan lotion to protect your skin.
We had driven through the park and visited all the highlights – waterfalls, water holes, termite moulds which were most interesting, the highest being approx. 4 meters. There was also a field with cathedral moulds that looked like a cemetery.
We were both delighted to enjoy our swimming pool on returning to our apartment.
During the day we had met up with someone from the ship who told Peter that our ship had been delayed by 24 hours due to an emergency whereby it had had to turn back towards Cairns to meet up with a helicopter.
After collecting our emails we found 2 from passengers from the ship informing us of such and the 3rd from Aida doing the same and advising that they had booked a room for us at a hotel directly opposite where the ship was coming in at the Harbour.
The day ended with a beautiful sunset which we enjoyed at the Harbour whilst checking the area where our ship was due to arrive.
Back at the hotel it was time to pack our bags and prepare to move hotels.
28.12.2017 Darwin und Umgebung
Die Nacht war ohne kühlender Aircondischen, sie war erstens laut und zweitens nicht Regulierbar, nicht sehr angenehm.
Nach dem Frühstück setzten wir unser Vorhaben, von Hellen empfohlen in den Litchfield Nationalpark zu fahren in die Tat um. Ca.140 Km lagen vor uns.
Nach einer kleinen Irrfahrt fanden wir den richtigen Weg und erreichten den Park
gegen 12.00Uhr außer den unspektakulären 4 Wasserfällen, in denen baden erlaubt ist, welches auch gut angenommen wurde sahen wir lediglich grün.
Der Stopp an einen einem Feld voller Termittenbauten war dagegen sehr eindrucksvoll.
Das höchste Gebilde war über 5 mtr. hoch.
Dort trafen wir eine junge Dame mit ihrer Mutter die mir irgendwie bekannt vor kam,
wie sich herausstellte sind die beiden ebenfalls auf der Cara unterwegs hatten sich aber in Sydney abgesetzt um auf eigene Faust etwas zu unternehmen.
Wir erfuhren im Gespräch das die Cara eines Gesundheitlichen Notfalls wegen nach zirka 35% der Wegstrecke von Cairns umkehren musste und den Hubschrauber entgegen fahren musste der die ärtzlich zu versorgende Person aufnehmen sollte um sie ins Krankenhaus zu fliegen. Das bedeutete für uns, das wir hatten noch eine weitere Nacht und Tag in Darwin zur Verfügung hatten. Ursprünglich sollte die Cara am 29.12.2017 von 8.00 - 22.00Uhr am Cruise Terminal liegen. Die neue Ankunftszeit ist jetzt der 30.12. die Liegezeit ändert sich von 7.00 - 17.00Uhr.
Als wir am Abend von unserer Tour zurück waren hatte Atanas bereits die Nachricht bestätigt. Von der Aida Gruppe kam dann auch die Nachricht, sie hatten uns bereits in einem 4 Sterne Hotel für eine weitere Nacht eingebucht. Aus dem Essen gehen im Restaurant wurde nichts da wir noch packen mussten. Ein trockenes Stück Baguette sowie je 1 Bier genügte uns..
29th December 2017
Check out and check in. We moved to our new hotel for one night. A very nice hotel and our room was very good. Aida had informed us that we were also covered for our evening meal.
We decided to drive along the coast today. We turned in our Hertz rental car which we had intended keeping for another 24 hours but as no-one was at the office we dropped off the keys and rented one from Thrifty across the road. We had a most relaxed day and I was able to do some aerial photography with my drone.
Some of the private houses along this coast were gigantic. Obviously a lot of rich people in this area.
The hotel restaurant had reserved a special room for the Aida guests as it turned out that there were to be approx. 40 - 50 guests staying overnight. The tours with Aida from Sydney to Ayers Rock were also at the hotel waiting to embark.
29.12.2017 Extra Tag in Darwin
Nach dem Frühstück zogen wir in das von Aida gebuchte Hotel um, bezogen unser Zimmer, danach wollten wir die Miewagenverlängerung organisieren was allerdings nicht klappte da das Büro geschlossen war, kurzerhand entschieden wir uns einen anderen Anbieter zu nehmen, was auch klappte.
Im neuen nun etwas kleineren Auto setzten wir unser Vorhaben die Küsten.-und Strandlandschaften von Darwin zu erkunden in die Tat um. Linda bekam wieder mehere Male Gelegenheit trotz schweißtreibender Hitze um die 35° Grad erfolgreich die Drohne fliegen zu lassen. Am East Point konnte Linda dann noch auf einer Grünfläche Kängeruhs fotografieren die erst in den späten Nachmittagsstunden ihre schattigen Plätze im Wald verlassen fotografieren. Zurück im Hotel mußten wir erst einmal lange duschen das war eine Wohltat für den schweißgebadeten Körper.
Zum von Aida eingeladenen Abendessen hatten wir uns mit einem weiteren Aida Paar, die auch auf eigene Faust unterwegs waren verabredet. Bei sehr guten Essen sowie Bier
Wein und Sekt verflog die Zeit wie im Flug.
30th December 2017
Our alarm clock rang at 5.30 a.m. I Linda was already awake at 4.30 a.m. as I wanted to upload some photos of our tour to our website and take advantage of the fast and free wifi. Breakfast 6.30 a.m and back to the ship to take our luggage before collecting Kathrin and Atanas from their cabin to spend the day with them touring Darwin. On arrival at the harbour we were not allowed to go onto the ship until after we had gone through customs which unfortunately were not coming until 9.45 a.m. and would only be there 1 hour. We managed to contact our friends who came down to the entrance and fortunately we were able to leave our luggage locked away until later in the morning.
We drove out to the Charles Darwin National park as I had been told you could get a fantastic view back to Darwin from the lookout platform. This was the case and I flew my drone to get a good aerial view. Thereafter we headed to the Botanical gardens were we spent 1/2 hour before leaving Kathrin and Atanas there while we drove back to the ship to pick up our luggage and go through customs. That all went smoothly and we took our luggage to our cabin before returning to pick up Kathrin & Atanas and head off up the coast. We had a most relaxing day and managed to find time to go swimming in a lake (with the locals) which was so warm that I preferred the cold shower thereafter on the beach and found this more refreshing than the lake!
It was advised not to swim on the local beach as crocodiles and jellyfish dangers were acute.
The original times for staying in Darwin on this day had been shortened due to the emergency case the ship had incurred but I really don't think this was a problem for people in the long run as it was so HOT and such a high humidity that a lot of passengers were very happy to be back on the ship in the shade.
We were greeted by friendly faces and hugs from some of the passengers with whom we have spent more time. One passenger, Monika had decorated our desk in our cabin with chocolate Christmas men and decorations. Another couple had deposited a bag with 2 chocolate Christmas men and a card for us. Crew members greeted us with "Welcome back home".
30.12.2017 Abreise von Darwin
Wir hatten uns per Mail für ca. 8.00 Uhr mit Kathrin und Atanas verabredet um mit ihnen die verbleibende Zeit bis zur Abfahrt zu verbringen. Als wir nach unserem frühen Frühstück am Kreuzfahrt-Terminal ankamen lag die Cara bereits dort, leider konnten wir mit unserem Gepäck (3 Koffer, Drohnentasche, Kamerarolltasche, Kamerarucksack, Lepptoptasche sowie kleine Untensillientasche für meine Stein- und Muschelsammlung nicht sofort an Bord sondern sollten stattdessen warten da die Behörden erst einen Abgleich mit uns und unseren Pässen vornehmen mussten. Das sollte erst zwischen 9.45 Uhr und 10.45 Uhr geschehen. Ich habe meinen Unmut zum Ausdruck gebracht, darauf haben die Security Mitarbeiter alles unternommen um über ihre Cara Security Kollegen zu erreichen das Kathrin und Atanas informiert wurde das wir auf sie warteten. Das klappte dann auch und wir starteten unsere kleine Tour, besuchten erst den Charles Darwin Nationalpark wo es Linda gelang von einer Plattform aus per Drohne die Skyline von Darwin zu filmen. Im Botanischen Garten setzten wir die beiden ab damit wir die Formalitäten mit dem Zoll erledigen konnten alles lief glatt und nach einer halben Stunde sammelten wir die beiden wieder ein, unser Ziel war nun der jeden Sonnabend stattfindende Stadtteilmarkt von Parap, er war angekündigt als Kunsthandwerk, was wir allerdings sahen waren von Asiaten betriebene Foodtracks. Etwas enttäuscht fuhren wir jetzt die Küste ab und sahen schöne Strände und unglaublich große und schöne Häuser.
Zu guter letzt gönnten wir uns noch eine Abkühlung, in einem See die allerdings keine war. Bei einer Aussentemperatur von 37° Grad + war das Wasser ebenfalls warm. Wir waren alle von der Hitze geschafft und außerdem war es langsam Zeit zum Schiff zurück zu kehren, ich entließ die 3 am Terminal und brachte den Mietwagen zurück in die Stadt, zu Fuß erreichte ich das Schiff pünktlich. Linda war bereits fleißig dabei die Koffer zu leeren und alles wieder an seinen Platz zurück zu legen, es ist kaum zu glauben, was wenn man Ordnung hält alles auf kleinem Raum unter zu bringen ist. Nach 2 Stunden Siesta aßen wir noch zu Abend im Marktrestaurant und sahen uns um 21.15 Uhr
den von 2 Filmemachern gedrehten Film “In Hundert Tagen und 22.000 km durch Australien” an. Der Film hat uns sehr gut gefallen besonders natürlich weil wir einige Gegenden erkannten an denen wir auch schon waren.
Müde von den doch anstrengenden Tagen genossen wir jetzt unser Bett in unserer Kabine 7224.
31st January 2017
We now have one sea day on 31st before reaching Indonesia. Our first stop on 1st January will be Komodo, thereafter Lombeck and on 3rd January we leave the ship again on Bali were we will stay for 3 1/2 days before flying onto Singapore to rejoin the ship there.
We have just heard that the ship has another emergency case. We have to sail to an small Indonesian island to let this passenger disembark. I think this is the 7th passenger that has taken ill and had to leave the ship. Two / three emergency cases arose in Australia.
We will spend the evening in a group of 8. This was all arranged before we left the ship on 16th December. We had given out English Christmas cards to various couples who were surprised and delighted with our gesture. We were going to be away from the ship for 2 weeks. One out of the group booked a table for 8 in the restaurant. The atmosphere as far as clothes is concerned is very relaxed on the ship but this evening I think some passengers will get a little dressed up - we will. There will be an open air party on deck. I am sure it will be a fun evening.

31.12.2017 Sylvester an Bord
Außer zum Frühstück und Mittagessen verbrachten wir die Zeit in unserer Kabine um
die bereits fertigen Berichte zu korrigieren und um die noch fehlenden zu schreiben.
Heute um 20.00 Uhr haben wir mit weitern 6 Mitreisenden gemeinsam einen Tisch gebucht und werden somit das neue Jahr vor vielen anderen Milliarden von Menschen auf unserer Erde begehen.
