14th January 2016 Madeira

Our port of stop was Funchal.

Funchal is the capital of Madeira. We had booked a hire car in advance. As Avis was quite away from the harbour we took a taxi to collect our vehicle. We found it a little bit difficult getting out of the town centre in the direction of Monte, but once on our way we had a most interesting tour over to the furthest side of the island to Santarem. Peter had read that we would be able to see the tradition old Madeira houses here. We were able to see them. On the return journey we passed through Monte and saw the “Wicker Toboggan Sled ride”.  The famous botanical gardens are also here in Monte but unfortunately we did not have enough time to experience them. You can´t do it all in one day.

On our way down from Monte we drove through the beautiful narrow streets of Funchal, enjoying the flora and romantic narrow streets. On returning to the car hire we received a lift back to the ship from one of the Avis employees. The sail away from Madeira was most enjoyable. Live music on deck with beautiful sunshine. There was a wonderful atmosphere among the passengers, a feeling of the start of a wonderful adventure! Peter and I danced to the live music and enjoyed every moment of this experience. Peter went inside and organised scones with strawberry jam and cream and I organised the tea to go with it. Traditional afternoon tea during the sail away. Traditional English and great fun!
